What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic or distressing life experiences. It is especially effective for those struggling with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges rooted in past experiences.
How EMDR Works
EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or disruptive. During sessions, the therapist guides the client through a series of bilateral stimulations—often using eye movements, taps, or sounds—while the client recalls specific traumatic memories. This process helps "unlock" the memory and allows the brain to integrate it in a more adaptive and less distressing way.
What to Expect
EMDR therapy typically follows an eight-phase protocol, beginning with history-taking and treatment planning, and progressing through memory reprocessing and integration. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses less on verbal processing and more on activating the brain’s natural healing ability.
